YOUR HONOR ENGLISH REVIEW
**Your Honor**: I watched this drama for the past five weeks, and it had me hooked. Now that it has ended, I feel a bit sad. I wonder why it was named “Your Honor.” It should have been named “Retribution” or “As You Sow, So Shall You Reap.” If only the last episode had come after the first, there wouldn’t have been so much bloodshed over eight episodes, nor would so many sins have been committed. Let’s get to the story.
The story begins with a young, asthmatic boy who is grieving. He visits a cemetery for Korean urns (what do we call this in Urdu?) to mourn his mother’s urn. On his way back, his car hits a motorcyclist. He gets out to check and sees the boy writhing in pain but not dead. He panics, has another asthma attack, and drives away. This was the first red flag. He goes home and tells his father, who is a principled judge, about the accident. The judge takes him to the police station, where they learn that the victim is the son of a notorious industrialist and gangster, who is currently serving a prison sentence. The judge realizes that his son’s life is in danger and decides to protect him at all costs. In doing so, he ends up committing crimes himself and even confesses to the gangster that he is the real culprit. This gangster, the owner of the Woo Won Group, controls everything in the country. The judge fails at every turn, while the gangster succeeds but is ultimately powerless against fate. His loss is great; his son is at stake, but his attempts to compensate for this loss are not worthy of sympathy.
**Lessons from the story**:
– Do not sympathize or pity any character; it will only harm you and break your heart.
**For the additional characters**:
– Everyone has to die one day, but you all seem to be in a hurry.
– **For the gangster aunt**: Despite being a small-time gangster, she manages to commit the worst crimes. Seeing her end makes no-one feel pity, remembering her deeds.
– **For the assembly member uncle**: The saying “invite trouble” fits him perfectly. His role was to meddle and get beaten up. Seeing his swollen face was quite amusing. He was already chubby, and his makeup made him look like a round dumpling.
– **For the security staff uncle**: His personality was quite impressive. Until the last episode, he maintained a certain impression while committing one heinous act after another. His job was to clean up the mess created by his boss, and in the end, he met the same fate.
– **For the police officers**: Keep your personal grudges and biases to yourself. The officer had a strong grudge against the villain. Your job is to catch criminals, not to chase them with a stick. Criminals will commit crimes; if one crime isn’t proven, catch them for another. The officer’s first resolve was wrong, and everything went downhill from there.
– **For the prosecutor lady**: She added twists and turns to the story from the fourth episode. I liked her until the last act, which made me want to slap her, but since she was otherwise good, I let it go. Everyone has committed at least one major sin.
– **For the villain brother**: If you have such a brother, you don’t need more relatives. He has a PhD in causing chaos and ruining lives. He is the elder brother who is the cause of every trouble for his younger siblings. If he weren’t so charming, he would have been very annoying.
– **For the villain brother’s younger brother**: Make idols, but not of your brother. He created trouble for himself by talking nonsense. First, he made a fuss about the bike, and before he even got it, he announced it to the world. As expected, he got jinxed. The first time he rode the bike was also the last.
– **For the villain brother’s younger sister**: She was the only one in the entire drama who didn’t commit a murder.Whenever she appeared on screen, she seemed like a poor heroine. But in the last episode, she ruined all her innocence. The episode wouldn’t have been an hour and five minutes long if she had remained an additional character who didn’t add much to the story. But in the last episode, she did all the foolish things typical of heroines. Interestingly, she suffered the most because of it.
For the villain aunt: She is a very good actress. From the first episode, she seemed so venomous, and by the last episode, I hated her. If there are such troublesome wives, even a don seems pitiable. Whenever I felt sorry for the villain uncle, it was because of this cunning aunt. Whenever he tried to take a breath of relief, she would create such a big mess that he would have to drop everything to save her. She deserved to be shown getting a couple of slaps.
For the villain uncle: The relationships he cherished the most became his punishment. His son, his wife, his daughter. And the lives of others were worth less than insects to him. He committed so many murders that half of Seoul is probably being eaten by fish these days. He thought he was the master of everything and forgot that there is a God too.
For the judge’s wife: Aunty, what happened to you was very wrong. But you didn’t think about your son or husband. If you had thought about the impact of your suicide on your son, this drama wouldn’t have started. This aunty was the root cause of all the trouble. If she hadn’t died, there wouldn’t have been dozens of deaths in ten episodes.
For the judge’s son: Son, if your father is a decent man, don’t get into trouble. The only difference between him and the villain brother was that the villain brother’s father wasn’t decent. So the lesson is, if you have a decent father, live a decent life. Your father can’t save you from your actions.
For the judge: If you are a decent, principled man, then instill those principles in your son. I felt the most pity for this uncle. In trying to save his son, he lost his reputation, his afterlife, and his honor. If it weren’t for his son, he would have lived a decent life and retired peacefully. Poor guy.
Personal Opinion: The script was excellent, and the story was full of suspense, keeping me hooked until the last scene of the last episode. Watching it weekly was better; I watched it with great interest. If someone sits down to watch it all at once, they’ll end up looking like a panda in the morning with huge dark circles under their eyes. Why? Because every episode ended on such a cliffhanger that you had to watch the next one immediately. I’m telling you in advance.
The story is about the fate of those who think they are the masters of the world. A don who did everything his way in his life, but God’s will nullified all his actions. A judge who took someone’s life to save his son but forgot that the one who saves lives is up above. If there is a competition between decency and thuggery, thuggery will win, but the scales of justice are not in human hands. The last dialogue left a deep impact; it is the essence of this drama, delivered by the judge. The writer did justice with this dialogue.
